What are your Splendour styling tips?
We are obviously big fans of warm tones, so orange, mustard and tan colours are our absolute favourites. The bolder the better ... bell sleeves, flares, two-pieces, tassels are an incredible way to stand out from the crowd. Headwear is a must - hats and turbans are the best way to complete an outfit - as well as big earrings and a comfy bag!
When did Nine Lives first make an impact on the festival scene?
At Bluesfest 2015, just before we launched our debut collection, our "troop" of girl babes wore some samples into the festival and we were all matchy-matchy (we love to claim that we started this trend!) We were stopped every 10m for a group photo (we've always wondering what random 40-year-old men and women do with these photos?!).
We will always remember the first time we spotted a group of girls all wearing Nine Lives at Laneway one year. It was such a cool feeling! We still LOVE seeing Bazaar Babes in our threads at festivals, and love going up to them for a chat and to snap their pic (and give out a cheeky discount code!)
Craziest festival memory?
Harvest festival in Brisbane, I think it was 2012. Ness was SO hungover on the way up. As soon as we arrived it absolutely pissed down with rain, and we spent a good 20 minutes trying to hunt down ponchos before we gave up and decided to embrace the rain. We were so dorky back then. I remember my boot started talking and I had to tape it up with a plastic bag. We spent some time in the arvo "rocking out" on rocking chairs haha.
As the sun set, the skies turned green and the whole festival went into a panic stricken lockdown ... we were told to find shelter immediately as a huge hail storm approached. They opened all the gates to the festival and we thought ... is it over already?! When the storm passed, the whole Riverstage was deserted and we wandered down to the front of the main stage, there was hardly anyone in sight. One of the sound guys was fiddling around with some cords on stage and I yelled out to him "are you plugging in or pulling out?!" ... he was plugging in! And we were front and centre for Beck and Sigur Ros - two amazing shows. Because the gates were open it became a free for all and some of our friends got in so easily. Crazy festival indeed!
What would your advice be to a festival virgin?
Round up a like-minded posse - the best memories are made with your best friends. If you have a band on your watch list who are playing at 1pm, be prepared to miss them when you get swept up in the hilarity that is pre-drinks!
At Splendour, when the sun goes down so does the temperature - big time! No one wants to wrap up their first festival in a silver hypothermia blanket (this is actually a thing ... we've seen it too many times!) Make sure you pack a deliciously warm jacket - use the cloak room.
What are your five must-haves for Splendour?
GLITTER! We love glitter! Always pack extra for the plain-faced folk who want to get amongst the fun! Also sturdy, comfortable trudging boots. A warm jacket. An epic group of friends. And an open mind - Splendour is its own little universe and one of the greatest places to get lost in. Just because you're not at a main stage doesn't mean you won't find magic.
Have you ever jumped the fence?
I can't say we've ever jumped a fence ... but we have walked through the gates of Bluesfest before with our own hand made wristbands! We managed to find the EXACT fluro green cardboard and whipped them up in the car five minutes before we went in!
Tips for setting up an epic base camp?
We've collected an array of vintage bed spreads from op shops over the years that make great picnic rugs. Also our Wandering Folk rugs are so beautiful and durable! It's always ideal to enclose your hang area with your cars, and don't forget to pack a speaker for those extended pre-festival hangs. Also we have come up with some inventive ways to sneak liquid contraband in over the years!
Top tips for backing it up?
BLTs for breakfast and bulk lemon ruskis! Yum! Also we believe tucking yourself in before the ungodly hour of 2am is crucial for next day freshness!
Describe the quirkiest person you have met at a festival?
Last year we lost ourselves for hours at the Gold Bar talking to Tom Tilley (JJJ Hack presenter, ultimate cool nerd). Slightly obsessed.
What's the craziest thing you have done at a festival?
One year we ended up backstage at Splendour and we helped ourselves to a certain band's drinks rider ... and sandwiches. Haha. We got caught red handed but we talked our way out of it, claiming to know "Ricky" the sound guy. Unfortunately it was photographic evidence that gave us away later that night ... it was very anxiety-inducing moment at the time but it's a story we can finally laugh at now.
Top five favourite live festival acts?
Earth Wind & Fire - Bluesfest 2012 (this started our addiction to funk!)
LCD Soundsystem - Coachella 2010
TV on the Radio - Splendour 2013
Outkast - Splendour 2014
Chic at Bluesfest this year. This was the best of the best!!
See you at Splendour Bazaar Babes!
