For the next month in the lead up to our mini festival Rainbow Revolution, we will be interviewing all the bands on the lineup and featuring their Q + A's on the Bazaar Blog.
We had the pleasure of kicking off the festivities with the boys from Lens. Lens, a psych quintet hailing from the Gold Coast are self-described 'astronaut rockers' taking influence from bands like Pond, Fuzz, Wand and also the bands of the 60's and 70's psychedelic explosion like The Grateful Dead, Cream, Hawkwind, Neu, Can. They will take you on a journey through space and time before crash landing in the gutter outside of the gig!
If you could go back or (forward) in time to experience one singular event, what would it be?
Jacob- I’d go into the future to the day that we figure out commercial intergalactic space travel, that would be pretty sick
Jye- Black Sabbath live at the California Jam in 1974 for sure!
Luke- I’d definitely go back to see Crosby Stills Nash and Young’s 1970 set at Fillmore East. By far my favourite band of all time and one of their best set lists ever!
Liam- One of Yes’ shows from the Close to the Edge tour definitely!
Riley- The first Tigers game, Richmond vs Geelong at the G in 1967
How would you describe your style (this can be musically, visually, artistically, sonically, socially, whatever!)
Jacob- I guess our style is pretty DIY in terms of our clothing or our music. We take inspirations from different genres and eras and combine them in our own way - so it's sort of like a big melting pot of different styles.
Luke- Plus we are all kinds of broke so it’s easier and cheaper to do all of our recording stuff ourselves, buy cheap clothes from op shops and get our friends to take photos and do artwork. But in the end it works out more natural and definitely suits what we are about.
What's your favourite Nine Lives Bazaar outfit and why?
Luke- You’ve picked a pretty bad group of guys to pick out women’s clothing, we are all pretty hopeless haha! I’d go with the Ziggy Flares, I’ve always wanted some flares and those ones are real nice.
Jacob- I think the Twiggy Top and Mojo Mini in disco gold look fun.
The name of your band is Lens, if life was an app, which lens or filter would you choose to see the world through and why?
Luke- Probably one that makes everything look like it’s out of an old science fiction book, something by H.P Lovecraft or Piers Anthony. We all love that kind of stuff so it’d be pretty cool to live in it!
Riley- The dog filter is pretty cute.
Finally - what's on the horizon for lens?
Luke- At the moment we are just playing a bunch of local shows around the Gold Coast. We are in the midst of mixing and mastering about 4 songs which we are still deciding what to do with, but you can definitely expect some new music from us and a bunch more shows very soon.
If you want to get amongst the psychedelic explosion that is Lens, come along to Rainbow Revolution at Miami Marketta on the 28th September. Tickets available here.
