Bazaar Babe: Ness Scharkie
Yesterday we had the pleasure of sitting down with the beautiful Ness Scharkie, the sole owner and creator of The Nesst. As we entered her studio we were hit with a beautiful scent of native plants, fresh blooms and evergreen foliage. To watch her create such beautiful florals in her own special space was an absolute privilege. Read on for a cheeky Q&A.
Talk us through your day.
Being the only one under the Nesst name means I prep / create everything, do all the accounting, admin, orders, social media etc etc. Pretty much every day is super different to the next.
However, generally I get up pretty early, bring in any flower deliveries from suppliers, go for a walk when I can, breakfast, coffee + then onto admin time.
From there I create any delivery bunches for the day + any other events that might be happening. On days that I have weddings, my full focus is on that from the moment I open my eyes till they are closed.
I always aim to end the day by eating dinner with my husband. Unless I have a wedding on + then it is eat while you go.. haha.
How long have you been working with florals?
Since 2011.
What made you choose the flower power life?
I went from being a professional makeup artist.. to making artificial flower crowns as a hobby.. that led to my makeup clients wanting me to create fresh flower crowns for them.. I was loving it so much that I went to TAFE to learn / study floristry + self taught myself the rest of the way. It's been a crazy / fun ride. I love how it has all fallen into place. I have been full time in the business since last year + continuing to learn so much every day.
Who / what keeps you inspired?
I think we live in a world that offers so much online inspiration that sometimes it’s hard to decipher when to stop looking. As much as I love Instagram + Pinterest, I find inspiration in everyday moments.
Little things like walking the dog + seeing a dried leaf on the ground to admire its texture or buying a coffee + noticing the art on their cups, or watching the sea spray coming off the ocean. I actually tend to leave my phone at home as much as I can now just so i can immerse myself in what is ‘actually’ happening around me + it reminds me to sit in my own space of ideas.
Do you have any style influences?
I’ve always loved Kate Moss for being able to mix boho + rocker vibes together so effortlessly.
Three fav brands?
Nine Lives Bazaar of course
Lack Of Colour (I couldn't not add a hat brand in right? haha)
Levi’s
Spell
Sorry I wrote four! couldn’t choose three! EEK!
Do you have a favourite, floral arrangement playlist?
I sure do… My 30th birthday playlist which is fulllllll of gangsta tunes + a mixed playlist of all my favourite old school / current tunes.
If you were a flower, what would you be?
A rose. Hardy yet sensitive, weathers storms, winds + drought yet eventually blooms through it all.
There’s my true Aquarian coming out.
Where can we find your gorgeous arrangements?
