With clashing 70s prints, textures of velvet and crochet we created a kaleidoscopic fantasy. Topped off with a touch of disco stardust.

Get aquainted with Mary Quant

"Fashion is not frivolous. It is part of being alive today."

Mary Quant was a self taught designer and a true fashion trailblazer. She lead the way in the mod and youth fashion movement of the 60s.

She opened her first store in London called 'Bazaar.' Here she sold clothes and accessories, and even had a basement restaurant. Bazaar became a meeting point in the London scene for the youth and artists. Mary would always have colourful and eccentric window displays for the people passing by.

Mary Quant was known for dressing the style icons of the 60s, including Twiggy and Patti Boyd. Her fashion catered to young women’s new sense of freedom and inspired them to rebel against traditional clothing and have fun! Mary captured the Swinging Sixties.

Mary Quant was known for inventing the mini skirt and hot pants. She made a statement when baring legs was considered outrageous. So we thank Mary for leading the way that allowed us to bring you our Kylie shorts and Mojo mini skirts.

A day in the life ~ Rachael Valentine

We invite you to join Rachael Valentine for a day in the life at home, isolation style. Rach is a good friend of NLB and the creative soul behind, The Craft Parlour. Rach inspires us to dream, create and most of all get crafty!

How do you start your day?

Each morning usually involves a dip in the ocean and a cup of cacao. Lately I’ve been taking long beach walks with a good podcast in my ears, learning about how people grow their businesses or something around spirituality. A sunrise beach meditation is an old favourite if I’m not feeling energetic.

What's been helping you get through isolation?

Lots of yoga and lots of sewing! Gold Coast yoga centre have been live streaming and it’s the bomb! I’ve been mending a pile of clothes that have needed some love and attention. I’ve also sewn two bucket hats and I’m about to start on a lounge wear set that will match one of the bucket hats. I’m going to call this collection my ISO uniform! Oh and I’ve been having a little play with clay and watching pottery tutorials which is so fun.

What's your favourite room/space in your house and why?

Probably our bedroom. The light is just beautiful in there all day long. When we closed our second store last year, I moved all the plants and bits and bobs from the studio into our bedroom and it just feels so calm and cosy in there!

What is your most treasured possession?

Probably our lounge. My husband, Sebby found it at a garage sale about ten years ago for $150. He hid it at our friend's house around the corner for a few weeks then surprised me on Christmas Day.

Describe your home in one sentence?

Thrifted, cosy, eclectic, vintage and jungle vibes.

What is one thing you are grateful for right now?

Some many things but firstly, my health and a roof over my head.

What are you reading, watching and listening to?

I’ve just binged on Ozark season three - so so good. I’ve slowly been reading Gabby Bernstein’s Super Attractor and listening to lots of different tracks like Midnight magic and Poolside, but also love having a sing along to some yoga mantra when ever I’m driving!

What's the first thing you are going to do when isolation ends?

Hug and kiss EVERYONE I see, including all of my friends. Plus we are going to throw one huge craft party at our studio to celebrate the end of ISO! Free hugs included.

A day in the life ~ Sharnee Thorpe

Social distancing has given us all the chance to slow down and ground ourselves, get our creative juices flowing and finish off some of those projects we may have forgotten about. But in these uncertain times we still all long to be connected. So we have chosen some of our favourite women to share a little about their day to day lives in isolation. Remember we are all in this together!

Up first we have our talented textile print designer, Sharnee Thorpe. We invite you to join her for a day in the life at home isolation style.

How do you start your day?

With a few stretches in the lounge room, most of the time with a baby crawling over me, then breakfast and a swim across the road at the beach with Velvet, my bub.

What's been helping you get through isolation?

All Press coffee brewed on my stove top and being able to Facetime friends during the day (they would have normally been out doing things and are now stuck at home with time to chat). I’m also very lucky to live on the same property as my parents and my sister recently returned from overseas with her boyfriend, so we have a little family community. It's pretty awesome.

What's your favourite room/space in your house and why?

Our kitchen, dining and lounge room is all one room, so I’ll say the section of the room where the dining table is. The morning light filters through our front door that has a beautiful lead light window that my 90 year old grandpa made, just before he passed away, it’s a pretty magical spot.

What is your most treasured possession?

Hmm that’s a tough one, I have so many! Can I give my top 3? My vintage print of the 'Blue Green Lady' that was left to me by grandpa, an awesome afghan vintage leather vest that my mum gave me and a giant shell that was a wedding present from a friend who lives on Thursday Island.

Describe your home in a sentence?

A rainbow explosion of vintage finds and dried flowers.

What is one thing you are grateful for right now?

That I live in a beautiful little coastal town away from the city and I can still go to the beach for a swims.

What are you reading, watching and listening to?

I’m reading the power of now by Eckhart Tolle (thought it was a good time to finally read this). And I’m listening to a podcast called ‘Beyond the Bump’ for some real mama chats.

What's the first thing you are going to do when isolation ends?

Go op shopping and out for cocktails and dinner with all my beautiful friends.

Baby doll you need some rock n roll. It would almost be time for our favourite festival, Byron Bay Bluesfest. We were so excited to announce we would be having our first NLB stall at this year's event (along with our friends at Wandering Folk). Sadly, due to the global Corona virus threat this years event has been cancelled.

There’s something about 'Blues' that’s magic. With that old time rock n roll, voices of soul and the best of blues and roots. This festival really makes you feel. So let us bring the festival to you! Here are our must see acts for the year that would have been Bluesfest 2020.
